Happy World Environment Day! In honor of the holiday, we at QYH are proud to announce that we have partnered with Great Leap Brewing as they achieve carbon neutrality through our forest offset projects! As part of their climate commitment, Great Leap is officially naming their Heaven and Earth Kolsch as their Environmental Beer—going forward, 5 RMB from every pint of the Kolsch will go into researching and offsetting their Scope 3 emissions.

We’d also like to thank our friends at Alaya Consulting Limited, who are assisting Great Leap to track and measure their carbon across Scopes 1, 2 and 3. As it turns out, most of their emissions come from electricity usage in their Tianjin Brewery, natural gas usage in their central kitchen, and their nationwide logistics chain, which was calculated at around 2,300 tons for Scope 1 and 2 in 2020.

These emissions will be offset using forest carbon credits sourced from our Improved Forest Management project in Jiangxi, China (VCS 1162). Prior to the project’s implementation, the land was open to logging for the sale of timber. However, since 2006, logging activity has been prohibited, and the land has been divided into five zones for ecological rehabilitation, allowing for the issuance of carbon credits. The sales of these credits contribute towards local poverty alleviation, job creation in forest management, and the conservation of soil and biodiversity.

In addition to offsetting, Great Leap will also be implementing a CO2 recycling system in Tianjin, reducing electrical demand and exhaust from vehicles, and improving their brewing process to ensure that their emissions per-liter-produced will decrease as they produce more beer.

While offsets can help us get to net-zero, more still needs to be done to close the emissions gap, and we at QYH are incredibly proud to be working with a company like Great Leap, which is striving to go beyond carbon offsetting in its efforts to bring truly sustainable beer to Beijing. Thanks to Allen LuethAndrew BoneTony Wong and Bhavya Vaghasia for making this collaboration a reality!
