“I can’t believe air can be sold for money.” Wang Baoxin, a forest worker with the Inner Mongolia forestry bureau, excitedly showed his mobile phone to a Xinhua reporter. The news that the Inner Mongolia greater khingan mountain forest region has completed several forest carbon credits deals went viral on WeChat moments.

Bao Guoqing, director of the carbon project office of the Forestry Bureau in Inner Mongolia’s Greater Hinggan Mountains, said that six forestry bureaus, including the Keyihe Forestry Bureau in Inner Mongolia, launched forestry carbon projects in 2014. It has a total area of 83,700 square kilometers and a total storage of 1.033 billion cubic meters of living trees. Based on the calculation that the forest absorbs about 1.83 tons of carbon dioxide on average for every 1 cubic meter of trees grown, the total forest carbon storage in the key forest areas of the Greater Hinggan Mountains in Inner Mongolia is about 1.89 billion tons. At present, about 4 million tons of forest carbon credits will be issued every year, which is a huge “carbon reservoir”.

Since the development of forest carbon projects, Inner Mongolia has completely stopped natural commercial logging and set up a special working group to employ local residents to monitor the forest situation in real time, which created many job opportunities. The Forestry Bureau implements special actions every year regarding deforestation rectification and forest reclamation to publicize the importance of forest protection and enhance the environmental consciousness of local people. The Forestry Bureau is active in enforcing wildlife protection laws, publicizing Wetland Preservation Day activities, publicizing Bird Week activities, promoting the significance of wildlife protection, improving the awareness of public wildlife protection, and organizing and implementing activities on forest fire prevention every day during the forest fire prevention period.
