How natural resources surveys can better serve the construction of ecological civilization, and how natural ecosystems can contribute to the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. On May 28, the Kunming Comprehensive Natural Resources Survey Center of China Geological Survey Bureau (Kunming Center) organized a meeting for the Technical and Management Committee of Technology Innovation Center for Natural Ecosystem Carbon Sink (Carbon Sink Center), Ministry of Natural Resources.
The meeting pointed out that carbon sinks are a new field for the Kunming Center. The meeting was convened to implement the program workshop through the construction and operation of the Carbon Sink Center, to make clear the next step of the construction and development planning of the Center. Hoping that all the experts will come up with good suggestions and work together to promote the Carbon Sink Innovation Center in the direction of high-quality development.

The meeting stressed that the creation of the Carbon Sink Center is to practice Xi Jinping’s idea of ecological civilization and to implements the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. Such an achievement is a rare opportunity that will take time to fully realize. Committee members should recognize and promote the work of the Carbon Sink Center from the perspective of the “Matters of National Significance”. Firstly, the center must improve our position, take on the role and further enhance the sense of responsibility and sense of mission; Secondly, the center must be down-to-earth, steady and far-reaching, taking one step at a time to promote the development of the Carbon Sink Center; Thirdly, the center must be based on the present, aiming for the future, and activate the resources of all parties to form the development of synergies.
In August 2022, Kunming Center was approved to build the Carbon Sink Center which is the first ministerial-level engineering technology innovation platform under the Geological Survey Integrated Natural Resources Investigation Command Center. Over the past year, the center has been committed to serving the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals, carrying out an in-depth Geological Survey Project for Comprehensive Investigation and Potential Evaluation of Natural Resource Carbon Sinks in Typical Areas of China, initially constructing a system of natural resources carbon sink investigation and monitoring technology and methodology, compiling methodological standards for natural resources carbon sink investigation, and completing the construction of Yunnan Jianshui Ecological Carbon Sink Industry Demonstration Base and the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau Ganre River Valley Observation Network, concentrating its efforts on providing a good environment for the development of the Carbon Sink Center.
